Week 4

We were a little disappointed when we saw our numbers this morning. However, we have both really noticed the change in Jay's stomach and how things are starting to get big on him. We are pretty sure he is putting on quite a bit of muscle. I'm fitting into jeans that were a little tight a month ago. At least we lost weight and will continue to do so!

Week 3 Journal Entry

We got our body buggs on Monday and started using them Tuesday. We had to adjust some things a bit this week to fit the body bugg requirements. For instance, Jay needs to burn 4500 calories a day and eat 2000 calories a day to lose 5 pounds a week. I have to eat 1700 and burn 2700 to lose 2 pounds a week.

So, Jay discovered that with his normal daily rountine and then working out 1 hour extra each day, he is easily burning his calories if not doing even more each day (sometimes he burns 5500 calories in a day - it's just not fair! :)

I discovered that I have to work my behind off just to burn my 2700 calories. We have a coaching session scheduled with body bugg this week to work out the kinks. I think I am going to change it to eating 1500 calories and burning 2500 calories in a day. It's more my speed!

EXERCISE

One noteworthy thing this week - Jay and I both feel that our lungs are really developing. We have been working out for 3 weeks straight and now when we get our heart rate up, we don't feel like our lungs are going to explode. If we run out of energy now, it's usually due to our muscles giving out rather than our lungs.

Kristi's Thoughts

Yesterday I was thinking while we were at the gym, thank goodness Jay and I work out together. I am an impatient person at the gym. I would like results quickly, but it doesn't work that way. When I work out by myself I want to leave after 20 mintues doing only one mile and justifying to myself that its' one more mile than I would have gone today.

But when I go with Jay, he is very diligent in his work out and takes his time but puts as much into that time as possible. I am trying to up my game and push myself. I have a little coach in my head that says, "You can do it. Just 30 more seconds..." or whatever small goal I've set at the time.  It's so easy to give up early but I'm learning that's almost as bad as giving up all together.

I have to keep pushing myself to my max or I won't see the results I want to. Anyway, that's just my thoughts for today. More later...

Week 2 Journal Entry

We get the bodybuggs tomorrow! We have been very anxiously waiting for them to arrive. This will really help us to know what our bodies naturally burn each day and how it changes when we eat different things or work out.

DIET

I ate 1500 calories every day this week and Jay ate 1800 calories each day. We tried to avoid more high in sodium foods as we think they are contributing to Jay's water retention. This week I had a craving for chocolate a couple of days in a row. I fixed one day by having a chocolate 100 calorie ice cream bar and the other day I had one Cadbury egg (150 calories) and worked it into my calories for the day.

EXERCISE

We worked out for 6 days in a row again this week making a total of 12 out of the last 14 days that we have gone to the gym. I also tried a hula video as extra work out and found it was very hard to do but fun!

FINAL THOUGHTS

We had a much easier time getting to the gym this week since it's now part of our everyday routine. We like to go when it's quiet, even if it means we are there until 8 pm. This week really flew past and we hope our efforts are shown tomorrow at the weigh in.

As always, no matter what the scale says, we will be continuing our journey to be healthier people!

Jay's Thoughts

So the first week wasn't my cup of tea. I really thought I did pretty good with the food angle but in the end I think that was my weakness. I worked out starting on Monday through Saturday for at least 1.5 hours a day, burning good amounts of calories and tearing my poor muscles up, I literally couldn't walk for several days without considerable pain. I won't saw I am unhappy with losing one pound in a week, but I was expecting a little more.

This week I am really focusing on getting my food and portions correct and thus far, I am doing great. But what I am really looking forward to is our new secret weapon that should get here in the next week or so... It is called the "bodybugg" and we actually saw it being used on the Biggest Loser and did some research and wow, this little contraption is pretty neat. You can check it out here: http://www.bodybugg.com. Basically you wear an arm band, just like you see all the people on Biggest Loser wearing, and it will tell you exactly how many calories you burn throughout the day. While resting, working out and even sleeping. Then combining that with knowing exactly how many calories we are eating during the day, we will be able to make sure that we eat less calories everyday then we are working off, which leads to weight loss.

So I am very anxious to get started with the bodybuggs and to see exactly where we are at with our food and working out so we can fine tune each to make the most of each and every day along this journey.

That is all I have for you now.

Jay

Week 1 Journal Entry

This week Jay and I worked out Monday-Saturday at least 1 hour each day. From our estimations, we spent about 8-12 hours in the gym, covered 30-35 miles combined and burned over 6,000 additional calories combined.

Today was our rest day from working out. Tomorrow is the big weigh in day! We hope to have lost a good amount of weight, but we know that even if the numbers aren't what we are hoping, we are going to continue on our weight loss plan.

I worked a couple of days this week temping but Jay had the week off for spring break. A big challenge for this coming week is to overcome the draw to stay home instead of going to the gym after Jay gets done with school for the day.

DIET:

According to the Biggest Loser plan, they recommend eating 4 cups of fruits and vegetables each day and I think we did that everyday. We just added one to each meal or snack and it really helped to cut down the cravings. We ate approximately 1500 calories a day also recommended - Jay sometimes had more depending on how hard he worked out. Until today, we didn't have a problem cutting calories. Like I said - until today - we were so hungry! I don't know what it was, but we were good and ate our healthy meals and snacks.

EXERCISE:

We are trying to balance cardio and weight lifting with a heavy focus on cardio so that we can burn the most calories. Jay likes the tredmill and I use the elliptical machine a majority of the time.

One day this week, after temping all day, we went to do our workout. Jay had already gone to the gym to do his earlier in the day so he just walked until I was done. It was really dreary outside and I knew Jay was waiting on me, so 20 minutes into a 30 minute cardio workout, I was about to call it quits. Then I thought about those 10 minutes and how it really is not much time at all and I choose what I want to do with those 10 minutes. So I chose to finish my workout.

FINAL THOUGHTS:

Jay and I have talked about what we choose to do with our time and how easily we can choose to workout instead of sit on the couch at home. The same amount of time will pass whether we are working out or not. It is up to us to decide what we do with our time and energy.

We heard that there are 1440 minutes in the day. What are we choosing to do with that time?
